Jharkhand Marks 25 Years of Statehood with Grand Celebrations; CM and Governor Share Greetings

Ranchi — Jharkhand commemorated the 25th anniversary of its formation on Saturday with a grand state-level celebration at Ranchi’s Morabadi Ground, where thousands gathered to mark the occasion.

Dignitaries, tribal community representatives, schoolchildren, and artists came together to participate in colourful cultural performances. Celebrations across districts included parades, sports competitions, and community events, reflecting the festive spirit statewide.

Jharkhand was officially created on November 15, 2000, carved out of 18 districts of Bihar, becoming the 28th state of India. The date was chosen to honour the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda — the revered tribal leader, social reformer, and freedom fighter. This year’s Foundation Day coincides with his 150th birth anniversary, giving the celebrations added significance.

Birsa Munda’s historic Ulgulan, an uprising against British oppression, remains a defining moment in tribal resistance and assertion of identity and rights.

The demand for a separate state first gained formal approval when the Bihar Assembly passed a resolution on July 22, 1997. The Parliament later enacted the Bihar Reorganisation Bill on August 2, 2000, during the tenure of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, laying the groundwork for the creation of Jharkhand.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren extended his greetings, paying tribute to the state’s tribal icons — Birsa Munda, Sidho-Kanho, Phool-Jhano, and others. He described the state’s 25-year journey as one of “transformation and resilience,” adding, “Jharkhand has moved from struggle to stability, and from stability to prosperity.”

He said that the next phase of development would prioritise inclusive growth, infrastructure advancement, and protection of tribal culture and rights. The Chief Minister urged citizens to unite in shaping a future where Jharkhand stands as an example of social justice, progress, and cultural pride.

Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar also conveyed his greetings, noting that 25 years of Jharkhand’s existence showcase achievements in agriculture, industry, sports, arts, and social welfare.
