Ranchi — A 25-year-old man arrested for allegedly molesting a minor was found dead inside the Murhu police station lockup in Jharkhand’s Khunti district on Tuesday morning, officials confirmed.
The deceased, identified as Rahul Manjhi of Meral village, was discovered hanging in the toilet of the lockup. Police have described the case as suicide.
According to reports, villagers accused Manjhi of misbehaving with a minor girl in Mahil village on Monday. Following an altercation, he initially fled but was later caught by locals, taken back to the village, and handed over to the police.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Manish Toppo said Manjhi was taken into custody late Monday night and placed in the lockup. “This morning, he was found dead, apparently having hanged himself. The matter is under investigation,” he said.
Senior officials have launched a probe, and the body has been sent for autopsy. Manjhi’s family, however, suspects foul play and has demanded an impartial inquiry. Police have assured that negligence, if any, will be looked into.
