Jharkhand HC pulls up govt for 9-year JTET delay, demands answers from Education Secretary

Ranchi — The Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday came down heavily on the state government for failing to hold the Jharkhand Teacher Eligibility Test (JTET) for nearly a decade and summoned the Education Secretary to appear in person to explain the delay.

A bench led by Justice Ananda Sen was hearing a plea filed by Ritesh Mahato and 401 other candidates, who argued that the prolonged inaction had derailed the careers of thousands of teaching aspirants.

The court noted that since Jharkhand’s formation 25 years ago, the JTET has only been conducted twice — once in 2013, when around 68,000 cleared it, and again in 2016, when 53,000 candidates passed. No exam has been held since.

Despite receiving over 3.65 lakh applications after issuing an advertisement in 2024, the government scrapped the process in June 2025, citing planned changes to recruitment rules. Petitioners alleged that repeated delays in the name of “policy revisions” are pushing many aspirants beyond the age limit.

Calling the matter “serious negligence,” the court has directed the Education Secretary to appear on Thursday with a clear explanation of why the exams have not been held and when they will finally resume.
