If conditions in Santhal don’t change, another Surya Hansda will rise: MLA Jairam Mahato

Ranchi: Dumri MLA Jairam Mahato has strongly objected to JMM leader Hemlal Murmu’s statement labelling Surya Hansda as a criminal, stating that such remarks are inappropriate in the absence of a court conviction. Speaking to Reporter Post, Mahato reminded that even former Chief Minister Dishom Guru had once faced jail and had to resign, but that did not erase his legacy or contribution.

Mahato expressed concern over the situation in Santhal Pargana, saying it is far from normal and is heavily affected by illegal mining. He described Surya Hansda as a voice against such unlawful activities—one that, he claimed, was deliberately suppressed.

The legislator defended Surya Hansda, calling him a "tribal voice" of resistance and questioned, “If he was a source of terror, why would people vote for him in elections?” He warned that if the prevailing conditions continue, the region might witness the emergence of another figure like Surya Hansda.

This statement comes amid political tension sparked by remarks from opposition leaders. Earlier, Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi had presented data to the media, stating that multiple cases were registered against Surya Hansda over the past five years. Later in the evening, JMM’s Hemlal Murmu held a press conference accusing the BJP of portraying a criminal as a messiah.
