Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has been credited by Israeli officials with helping avert a potentially major aviation disaster after an altercation in the cockpit of flydubai flight FZ1073 forced the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv service to make an emergency diversion to Saudi Arabia.

The Boeing 737, carrying more than 170 passengers, was flying from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls.

According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Machchhar was injured during the confrontation but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing a crew member and passengers to enter and restrain the other pilot. The aircraft reportedly suffered a sharp loss of altitude during the struggle before control was regained.

The flight was subsequently diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. All passengers were reported safe, while both pilots were taken for medical treatment. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh later said Machchhar was in stable condition.

Netanyahu praised Machchhar as well as the crew members and passengers who intervened during the cockpit incident. However, the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including the motive of the co-pilot and the exact sequence of events, remain under investigation. Flydubai has also urged against speculation until the inquiry is completed.

Machchhar has been flying for flydubai since June 2022, according to his LinkedIn profile, after spending more than a decade with Indian low-cost carrier SpiceJet. Reports based on his professional profile indicate that he has more than 13 years of commercial aviation experience and nearly 10,000 hours of flying experience on Boeing 737 aircraft.

He joined SpiceJet in 2011 and held several positions, including line-training captain and senior commander, before moving to flydubai as a direct-entry captain in 2022.

Machchhar’s journey into aviation was not a straightforward one. He initially pursued studies connected to his family’s textile business before developing an interest in flying after attending an aviation-related seminar during a management course.

He later underwent pilot training in New Zealand. In a podcast, Machchhar recalled that his training cost around Rs 16-17 lakh and said his mother was initially concerned about his decision to pursue aviation, while his father was more supportive of his career choice.

Flydubai confirmed that an incident had occurred on the flight deck and that the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, where it landed safely. The airline has said its flights to and from Israel will remain suspended while the incident is investigated.

Following the emergency diversion, the passengers were transported onward to Israel as authorities continued their investigation into the cockpit incident.

The episode has brought attention to the importance of cockpit security, crew coordination and emergency decision-making during situations in which an aircraft’s flight crew is suddenly incapacitated or compromised. The final findings of the investigation are expected to establish the precise circumstances that led to the confrontation and the aircraft’s subsequent diversion.
