Ex-BJP Leader Surya Hansda Killed in Jharkhand Police Encounter

Godda — Former BJP leader and wanted criminal Surya Hansda was gunned down in a police encounter in Jharkhand’s Godda district on Monday morning, officials confirmed.

The operation occurred near Jirli Samari Pahari in Boarijor police station’s jurisdiction — a remote, hilly area where Hansda was allegedly hiding. Security forces swiftly cordoned off the site, restricting access while crowds gathered in nearby areas.

SP Mukesh Kumar stated that the details of the encounter would be shared in an afternoon press briefing.

Hansda, hailing from Dakaita village, once wielded political influence. He represented the BJP in the 2019 Borio assembly election, later switching to JLKM in 2024 after losing the BJP ticket, but was unsuccessful.

His criminal record includes dozens of cases ranging from arson to armed attacks. Notably, he was named in the May 27 firing at Eastern Coalfields Ltd’s Rajmahal project and in an earlier case involving the torching of vehicles in Sahibganj district.

According to police, Hansda had been evading arrest for months, relocating frequently as his name cropped up in several recent violent crimes.
