Ranchi – Panic spread across Mardu village in the Silli block of Ranchi district on Wednesday morning after a full-grown tiger entered a residential house and stayed inside for over 12 hours.
The tiger reportedly entered the home of Puran Chand Mahato around 4:30 a.m., just as he returned from a night shift at the Hindalco factory in Muri. While checking on his goats, Mahato found himself face-to-face with the predator. He quickly acted to get his two daughters out and locked the tiger inside.
News of the incident quickly went viral, drawing thousands of onlookers to the village. By 11 a.m., the Ranchi Sadar SDO enforced restrictions within a 200-metre radius around the house to control the crowd.
Forest officials and police teams rushed to the scene, launching a full-scale rescue operation. A partial image of the tiger, taken through a hole in the wall, confirmed it was crouching inside a room.
An initial rescue team from Birsa Biological Park failed to tranquilize the tiger, prompting officials to call in experts from the Betla Tiger Reserve in Palamu. As of 4:30 p.m., the tiger — believed to be a Royal Bengal Tiger — remained locked inside.
Located near the West Bengal border, the area sometimes witnesses wildlife movement, but such a situation is extremely rare. Efforts continue to safely capture the tiger before nightfall.
