PM Modi Pays Tribute to Birsa Munda on His Death Anniversary: 'His Sacrifice Continues to Inspire'

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid heartfelt tribute to legendary tribal leader and freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his 125th death anniversary, observed as 'Balidan Diwas'. Describing him as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to tribal welfare, PM Modi said Birsa Munda’s life continues to inspire the nation.

Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote:
"Respectful tribute to the great hero of the freedom struggle, Bhagwan Birsa Munda ji, on his Balidan Diwas. He dedicated his life to the welfare of tribal brothers and sisters and to the protection of their rights. His sacrifice and dedication will always be a source of inspiration for the countrymen."

Born on November 15, 1875, in Ulihatu village—now in present-day Jharkhand—Birsa Munda rose to prominence in the late 19th century as a powerful voice against British colonial exploitation.

Despite limited formal education, he united tribal communities against the injustices of British officials, landlords, and missionaries. He also spearheaded a socio-religious reform movement, encouraging Adivasis to reclaim their cultural identity and assert their rights.

Revered as 'Dharti Aaba' or 'Father of the Earth' by tribal communities, Birsa Munda died at just 25 years old while in British custody, but his legacy lives on as a powerful symbol of indigenous resistance and empowerment.

On November 15, 2024, Prime Minister Modi had launched the year-long 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Birsa Munda during the Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas held in Jamui, Bihar. On the occasion, he inaugurated development projects worth over ?6,640 crore and also released a commemorative coin and postage stamp in the leader's honour.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi emphasized that Birsa Munda’s contributions had been neglected for decades after Independence, and the government’s efforts were aimed at giving tribal heroes the recognition they truly deserve.

The Modi government had officially declared November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas to honour tribal freedom fighters and acknowledge their vital role in India’s struggle for independence and cultural identity.
