First Unit of NTPC’s North Karanpura Thermal Power Plant likely to start in March

Ranchi: Jharkhand which has been facing power crisis will now start getting 150 MW power which is going to give a lot of relief to the state and its people. This is becoming possible because NTPC’s superthermal power plant at North Karanpura which will start producing electricity soon.

According to the department, power generation will start from this plant from March. Presently coal stock is being deposited here. The trial of this plant has been done only last year. Now production will start here. Coal was not being transported due to opposition from the rayats. NTPC North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Plant was to start from this month itself but due to the opposition of the rayats on various issues, the coal from block at Kenedari could not be lifted.

The solution to the protest of the rayats has been found. Now the transportation of coal has started. After getting sufficient stock of coal, power generation will start from this plant of NTPC located at Chatra. According to NTPC management, the work of unit number one of 660 MW capacity has been completed. Power generation will be started from next month. The trial run of the plant has been successful.

Now the commercial supply of electricity has to be started. Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam will get 150 MW power out of 660 MW under the power purchase agreement. A total of 1980 MW of electricity will be generated from three units of 660 MW each from this super thermal power plant.

Production will take place from the units in a phased manner. One unit is complete. The demand for electricity in Jharkhand is 2200 to 2600 MW. But there remains a gap of 150 to 200 MW in demand and supply. With the commissioning of the North Karanpura plant, the state will not have to face power crisis if it gets 150 MW power. At the same time, a lot of improvement will be seen in load shedding.

The foundation stone of the NTPC North Karanpura project was laid by Bharat Ratna former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on March 6, 1999. It took about 23 years for the project to become operational. It was told that by the year 2023, there is a plan to start all three units of power plants.
