Helly Shah Embraces Comedy for the First Time with ‘Chumbak’

Actress Helly Shah is set to explore a completely different side of her acting with her upcoming streaming series ‘Chumbak’, where she takes on a full-fledged comic role for the first time.

Speaking at the trailer launch of the series in Mumbai on Wednesday, Helly opened up about the challenges of performing comedy and admitted that she was initially nervous about whether she would be able to pull off the role.

“Comedy is completely new. This is my first time doing comedy. I have never done comedy before. And I was honestly so nervous, so unsure if I will be able to pull it off or not,” she said.

The actress credited director Atish Kapadia for giving her the confidence to take on the unfamiliar genre. She said his faith in her abilities encouraged her to approach the role without trying to force anything.

“But I personally feel it's Atish sir's trust and belief in me that I can do this. And I am just so, so glad that he could see that spark of twinkle in me because I honestly went on the set after surrendering,” Helly added.

Although Helly has previously appeared in the popular comedy-drama streaming series ‘Gullak’, her performance there was largely rooted in the dramatic aspects of the story. With ‘Chumbak’, she gets an opportunity to explore comedy more extensively.

The actress said the experience helped her discover an unexpected dimension of her own acting abilities.

“I didn't know how it will be, what I will do. But he has helped me explore a part of myself as an actor. Because I didn't know that I could do comedy. I didn't know that something like this could come out of me,” she said.

For Helly, the project appears to be more than just a change of genre. It represents an opportunity to step outside her comfort zone and experiment with a performance style she had never seriously attempted before.

She also became emotional while talking about the director's faith in her, revealing how personally meaningful the experience has been.

“And I am so thankful to sir. Because I think I told sir on the last day as well. I think I shiver because this is something so close to my heart. And I always get emotional that I have done something new. And he has trusted me with all his heart,” she added.

With ‘Chumbak’, Helly Shah is looking to surprise audiences by moving away from the dramatic roles that have largely defined her screen journey and showcasing her comic timing and lighter side.
