Mumbai: Actress Kajal Aggarwal says her upcoming film The India Story has fulfilled a long-cherished ambition of starring in a courtroom drama, describing the role as one of the most emotionally demanding and rewarding experiences of her career.
In the film, Kajal plays Advocate Archana, a lawyer who joins hands with an ordinary citizen in a legal battle against influential corporate entities accused of putting public lives at risk. Through its courtroom proceedings and investigative narrative, the film highlights issues such as food safety, corporate accountability and environmental protection.
Speaking to IANS during the film's promotional campaign in Mumbai, Kajal said she had been waiting for the right courtroom drama that offered both depth and a meaningful challenge.
"I have wanted to be part of a courtroom drama for a very long time. I was looking for a role that was substantial and challenging, and The India Story gave me exactly that," she said.
Reflecting on her performance, the actress said the film marked an important stage in her growth as an actor. She explained that many of the emotional moments felt genuine rather than performed, allowing her to connect deeply with the character.
"There was a lot of evolution, growth and maturity in my performance. I felt I was living those moments instead of acting them. The tears, emotions and struggles came naturally. Feelings of disappointment, success, loss and grief all felt real," Kajal said.
She added that for an actor, the greatest challenge is to reach a point where the awareness of performing disappears completely.
"When you forget that you're acting and simply exist within the scene, that's a very special place to reach as an artist. You're no longer trying to create authenticity—you are simply living the moment," she said.
Also starring Shreyas Talpade in a lead role, The India Story explores the misuse of pesticides, food adulteration and their impact on public health. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on July 24, 2026.
