Dwayne Johnson Highlights Cultural Roots of Masculinity with Met Gala Look

At the Met Gala 2026 held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dwayne Johnson grabbed attention with a distinctive outfit that carried cultural significance.

The Hollywood star walked the red carpet in a black mohair tailcoat paired with a pleated skirt, alongside his wife, Lauren Hashian. The ensemble, created by designer Thom Browne, featured intricate detailing, including over 350 meters of hand-pleated silk ribbons arranged in a skeletal-inspired design.

Explaining his choice, Johnson said the look was inspired by Polynesian culture, where garments like lavalavas—traditional wrap skirts—are commonly worn by men. He emphasized that in his culture, such attire is associated with strength and masculinity, noting that “the most masculine men wear skirts.”

Johnson said he felt confident and comfortable in the outfit, adding that he immediately connected with the concept when it was first proposed to him.

The actor has previously spoken about redefining masculinity. At CinemaCon 2026, while promoting Moana, he described “real masculinity” as supporting and empowering women. He highlighted that the film’s central character is a warrior, not a traditional princess, and said men should champion the women in their lives.

The event also saw Beyoncé serve as co-chair alongside Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour, with a host committee featuring several prominent names from entertainment and fashion.
Johnson’s appearance stood out not just for its style, but for the cultural message it conveyed, sparking conversation around identity and evolving ideas of masculinity.
