Los Angeles — Acclaimed filmmaker Greta Gerwig has officially locked in the title, cast, and release dates for her much-anticipated Narnia adaptation, marking a major milestone for the long-awaited project backed by Netflix.
Titled Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, the film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on February 12, 2027, before making its way to Netflix on April 2, 2027. The movie is based on The Magician's Nephew, part of The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.
The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Emma Mackey, and Denise Gough.
Gerwig, best known for directing the blockbuster Barbie, described the opportunity to bring Narnia to life as “the honour of a lifetime.” Reflecting on her childhood connection to the story, she spoke about being captivated by the magical idea of a world created through music and imagination.
In addition to directing, Gerwig is also writing and producing the film. The story, originally published in 1955, serves as a prequel to the iconic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, exploring the origins of Narnia and the creation of the world by the lion Aslan.
Despite her excitement, Gerwig admitted she feels a sense of responsibility and even “terror” in adapting such a beloved literary work, emphasizing her deep respect for Lewis’s legacy.
Music for the film is being developed by Andrew Wyatt alongside his frequent collaborator Mark Ronson, with early hints suggesting a distinctive and immersive musical experience aligned with Gerwig’s creative vision.
