Vartika Singh on Working with Emraan Hashmi in ‘Haq’: 'He Created an Equal and Supportive Space on Set'

Mumbai — Actress Vartika Singh has opened up about her debut film “Haq” and her experience working alongside Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, calling the experience both inspiring and creatively enriching.

In an exclusive conversation with IANS, the former Miss Universe India praised Emraan Hashmi for his humility and collaborative spirit on set.

“Emraan is such a grounded artist,” Vartika said. “When you meet him, there’s no air of stardom. He makes you feel just as important as he is. Sitting next to him, you don’t feel like you’re with a superstar. He creates an equal space, which helps you perform better. He’s effortless in his craft — he can switch from casual to deeply intense scenes so naturally that it leaves you amazed.”

Speaking about her co-star Yami Gautam, Vartika shared that most of their scenes were emotionally intense. “There wasn’t much room for light moments between shots because of the emotional depth of our characters. But I learned so much from Yami — her stillness, her precision, and how deeply she stays connected to her character, even through subtle gestures like holding a handkerchief. That level of detailing is truly inspiring.”

Reflecting on how she prepared for her role as Saira, Vartika said she immersed herself completely in the character’s emotional world. “As an actor, you have to surrender completely. I tried to understand how Saira thinks and feels. I even wrote poems as her to grasp her inner emotions. I imagined her entire backstory — her childhood, her relationship with Abbas, and everything she had endured. I kept a diary where I connected all her emotional dots and added touches of my own personality, like empathy, to make her feel more real.”

“Haq,” directed by Suparn S. Varma, is a courtroom drama loosely inspired by the Shah Bano case. The film stars Emraan Hashmi, Yami Gautam, and Vartika Singh in pivotal roles. It follows Saira (played by Vartika), who falls in love with Shazia’s husband (Emraan Hashmi), leading to a controversial second marriage that sets off a gripping legal battle.

The film was released on November 7, 2025, marking Vartika Singh’s Bollywood debut.
