Trump Says Iran Sanctions Relief Will Be Linked to Purchases of US Farm Products

Washington — US President Donald Trump has said that any sanctions relief granted to Iran under a potential agreement would be tied to purchases of American agricultural products, while reiterating that Tehran would never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.

Speaking at the White House after signing executive orders related to quantum technology, Trump offered his most detailed comments so far on the ongoing negotiations with Iran. He described the talks as constructive and said shipping through the Strait of Hormuz had returned to normal.

"We have an open strait and we have a country that will never have a nuclear weapon," Trump said.

His remarks came as JD Vance and a US delegation continued negotiations with Iranian officials in Switzerland. The discussions are focused on Iran's nuclear programme, maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional de-escalation efforts.

Trump said the administration was open to easing sanctions but stressed that any funds released to Iran would be earmarked for humanitarian purchases, specifically food sourced from American farmers.

"Money that's being unfrozen is going to be used to buy food," he said, adding that the purchases would be made exclusively from US producers.

"Corn, soybeans and all the things they need are going to be bought from our farmers," he added.

When asked whether sanctions relief could enable Iran to strengthen its military, Trump maintained that the understanding was for the money to be used only for humanitarian purposes.

"They're supposed to use the money to buy food for their people because right now their people are very hungry," he said.

Expressing optimism about the negotiations, Trump said the two sides were making progress toward what he described as a fair and reasonable agreement.

"We're doing very well in terms of negotiating a fair and reasonable deal," he said.

The President also warned that Washington would take action if Iran failed to honour any future agreement.

"If Iran doesn't live up to their agreement or if they're not behaving, I will do what I have to do," he said.

Rejecting suggestions that Iran had gained leverage during the talks, Trump claimed recent military operations had severely weakened the country's capabilities.

"Their navy is gone. Their air force is gone. Their leaders are all dead. Their whole country is a mess. Their economy is shot," he said.

Trump also praised Vice President JD Vance for his role in the negotiations, calling him "a very smart guy" who had done "a fantastic job."

The President further claimed that energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz had recovered strongly following recent tensions.

"We took in more oil yesterday than has ever gone through the strait. The strait is totally open," he said.
