MEA Debunks Oman Tanker Attack Rumours, Confirms Crew of MT Liaki Freedom Safe

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday dismissed reports claiming that the Indian-crewed tanker MT Liaki Freedom had come under attack off the coast of Oman, confirming that all crew members on board are safe.

The clarification came after social media posts and some media reports alleged that the vessel had been targeted in a fresh maritime incident, with claims that several sailors had been killed.

Acting swiftly, Indian authorities established direct contact with the vessel's master to verify the situation. According to the MEA, the ship's captain confirmed that there had been no attack and that all crew members were safe.

"We have spoken with the Master of the vessel Liaki Freedom, who has confirmed that all crew members are safe and that the reported information is false," the ministry said.

The MEA's Fact Check Unit also issued a "Fake News Alert", urging the public to remain cautious about unverified claims circulating on social media and other platforms.

The rumours surfaced amid heightened concerns over maritime security in the Gulf region following a series of recent incidents involving commercial vessels carrying Indian seafarers. Reports suggesting that communication had been lost with MT Liaki Freedom triggered fears of another attack in the strategically important waters near the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.

Subsequent verification by Indian authorities and audio communication from the vessel confirmed that there was no fire, no attack and that operations onboard remained normal.

The episode comes at a time when New Delhi is closely monitoring the safety of Indian seafarers in the Gulf following recent attacks on commercial ships in the region. The Indian government has repeatedly stressed the need to protect civilian shipping and ensure the safety of maritime personnel operating in international waters.

With the MEA's clarification, concerns surrounding MT Liaki Freedom have been put to rest, although authorities continue to remain vigilant amid ongoing tensions in the region.
