India–Bangladesh Reset Gains Pace with Focus on Security and Connectivity

New Delhi — India and Bangladesh are moving toward a renewed phase in bilateral ties, with upcoming high-level talks expected to focus on security, connectivity, and intelligence cooperation.

The diplomatic reset follows political changes in Bangladesh, with Tarique Rahman assuming office as Prime Minister. Backchannel efforts over recent months have helped rebuild engagement, and the visit of Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman to India is being seen as a key step in formalizing this new roadmap.

During his two-day visit, Rahman is scheduled to meet S. Jaishankar and Ajit Doval. His discussions with Jaishankar are expected to pave the way for a future visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to New Delhi, while talks with Doval will focus heavily on security and intelligence matters.

A major area of discussion will be border management. India and Bangladesh share a long and sensitive border, making issues like illegal immigration, smuggling, and cross-border crime critical concerns. Both sides are expected to explore ways to strengthen coordination and ensure that the border remains secure and free from unlawful activities.

Counter-terrorism cooperation will also be high on the agenda, along with enhanced intelligence sharing to tackle threats such as counterfeiting and infiltration. Officials believe closer collaboration in these areas is essential for maintaining regional stability.

Connectivity and trade are equally important pillars of the talks. India is likely to push for smoother transit routes through Bangladesh to improve access to its northeastern states, while Dhaka may seek greater access to Indian markets. Strengthening infrastructure and easing logistics could significantly boost economic ties between the two nations.

Another key focus will be the Bay of Bengal, which both countries see as a strategic hub for trade and energy movement—especially at a time when global supply chains face disruptions due to tensions in regions like the Persian Gulf.

Additional issues, including water-sharing agreements and trade imbalances, are also expected to be discussed, with the aim of reaching broader understandings during the anticipated summit between Narendra Modi and Tarique Rahman.

Observers note that beyond immediate policy goals, the visit is also about rebuilding long-term trust after a period of political uncertainty following the exit of Sheikh Hasina. India has consistently emphasized the importance of stability and strong neighbourly relations, and this renewed engagement signals a shared commitment to that vision.
