18 bodies retrieved after bus plunges into river in Bangladesh

Dhaka: At least 18 bodies have been recovered after a passenger bus plunged into the Padma River from a pontoon at a terminal in Rajbari District, about 125 km south of Dhaka.

The accident occurred around 5:15 p.m. local time on Wednesday when the Dhaka-bound bus reportedly lost control, overturned and sank to an estimated depth of 80 feet, according to rescue officials. Authorities said around 40 passengers were believed to be on board.

Rajbari Deputy Commissioner Sultana Akhtar said the bodies recovered so far include 10 women and two children. Initially, two bodies were found, and later, rescue vessel Hamza lifted the submerged bus late at night, leading to the recovery of 16 more victims.

Rescue operations continued with divers from the fire service and coastguard, supported by military and police personnel, searching for the missing passengers. Officials fear the death toll could rise as the operation is still underway.

Most passengers were reportedly returning to the capital after the Eid holidays. Witnesses said many victims belonged to the same family, with some survivors managing to escape as they were standing outside the bus when it plunged into the river.

According to local media reports, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed deep concern over the tragedy and directed authorities to intensify rescue efforts and ensure proper treatment for the injured.
