Trump’s Interest in Greenland Unchanged, Says Danish PM

Munich — Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stated that Donald Trump continues to maintain his interest in acquiring Greenland.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Frederiksen emphasised that the US President remains serious about the matter. She reiterated Denmark’s stance on protecting national sovereignty and the right of people to self-determination, noting that Greenland’s residents have clearly expressed their unwillingness to become part of the United States.

According to reports, a joint working group involving the US, Denmark, and Greenland has been established to address American security concerns in the Arctic region. Frederiksen said the working group offers a platform for dialogue, but stressed that Denmark has firm boundaries that it will not cross while handling the issue.

Earlier this month, concerns about a potential US military move to seize Greenland eased after Trump ruled out the use of force during discussions in Davos, according to a report by Xinhua News Agency.

Trump also decided not to proceed with his earlier threat to impose tariffs on eight European nations following a meeting with Mark Rutte, head of the NATO.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, functions as a self-governing territory under the Kingdom of Denmark, which retains authority over its defence and foreign affairs. Since returning to office in 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to acquire Greenland, a proposal that has triggered strong opposition across Europe.
