New Delhi — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, assuring India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability in the Himalayan nation.
During the conversation, Modi also extended warm greetings to Karki and the people of Nepal on the eve of their National Day, which will be observed on Friday.
Sharing details of the call on X, the Prime Minister wrote: “Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow.”
On September 13, Modi had congratulated Karki on taking charge as the head of Nepal’s interim government, reiterating India’s commitment to the country’s peace, progress, and prosperity.
Sushila Karki, 73, was sworn in on September 12 as Nepal’s first-ever woman Prime Minister. Following her appointment, India welcomed the new interim government, with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressing hope that the transition would foster peace and stability.
“As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy, and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries,” the MEA said in a statement.
Karki assumed office after the collapse of the KP Sharma Oli-led government amid violent Gen-Z protests, emerging as the choice of activists demanding political change.
