London: The Indian men's hockey team produced a disciplined defensive performance to edge past England 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in the reverse fixture of the FIH Hockey Pro League at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Sunday. Abhishek, Shilanand Lakra and Hardik Singh found the net in the shootout, while defender Sanjay was named Player of the Match for his outstanding display at the back.
England dominated the early stages and won a penalty corner after Sam Ward forced one from Yashdeep Singh. Goalkeeper Mohith Shashikumar came to India's rescue with a brilliant double save before making two more crucial stops to deny Ward and Sanford, helping India survive sustained pressure.

India's best chance of the opening quarter came through Abhishek, but the visitors were largely occupied with defending as the first period ended 0-0.
The home side continued to control possession in the second quarter and threatened through Bandurak, while Jarmanpreet Singh tested the England goalkeeper at the other end. England kept pushing forward, but India's organised defence ensured the scores remained level at halftime.
India looked far more aggressive after the break. Hardik Singh sparked a dangerous counterattack with a strong run through midfield before setting up Mandeep Singh, whose effort was well saved. Hardik later earned India a penalty corner in the 37th minute, but Amandeep Lakra failed to convert the opportunity.
One of the biggest moments of the match came late in the third quarter when England were awarded a penalty stroke after Yashdeep Singh was ruled to have fouled Henry Croft. India immediately reviewed the decision, and video replays showed a clean tackle, leading to the penalty stroke being overturned. England's Nicholas Park was subsequently shown a green card.
India created another penalty corner soon after, but England's goalkeeper stood firm. Tempers briefly flared between the two sides, with Dilpreet Singh receiving a green card. England also threatened through Thomas Sorsby, but neither team managed to find the breakthrough before the final quarter.
England continued to press in the closing period, only for substitute goalkeeper Suraj Karkera to make an excellent save. India then enjoyed one of their best attacking spells as Sukhjeet Singh won a penalty corner, leading to multiple set-piece opportunities, but England's defence remained solid.
The hosts mounted one final push in the closing minutes. Jarmanpreet Singh intercepted a dangerous counterattack, while Karkera denied England from another penalty corner. With only two seconds left on the clock, England were awarded yet another penalty corner, but India's successful video referral overturned the decision, sending the contest into a shootout after a 0-0 draw.
India kept their composure in the shootout as Abhishek, Shilanand Lakra and Hardik Singh converted their chances to seal a 3-2 victory and earn the bonus point.
The result underlined India's defensive strength and ability to deliver under pressure. Sanjay led the backline superbly to earn the Player of the Match award, while both Mohith Shashikumar and Suraj Karkera made crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet. The victory also provided India with a valuable confidence boost in their final FIH Hockey Pro League outing before the upcoming Hockey World Cup.
