Fullerton (US), June 28: Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth secured his place in the final of the BWF US Open 2026 after overcoming Japan’s fourth seed Yudai Okimoto in a hard-fought men’s singles semifinal on Sunday (IST).
The 33-year-old Indian battled for one hour and 12 minutes before sealing a 22-20, 15-21, 21-19 victory, earning his first final appearance of the year.
Srikanth had to dig deep in the opening game after letting a 17-11 lead slip. Okimoto fought back to earn a game point, but the Indian remained composed, saved it, and claimed the next two points to take the game. The Japanese player bounced back strongly in the second game to level the match and force a decider.

The final game unfolded in similar fashion. Srikanth built a 10-5 lead before Okimoto drew level at 12-12. The Indian then won six consecutive points to regain control, but another comeback from the Japanese shuttler made it 18-all. Relying on his experience, Srikanth mixed up the pace of the rallies and held his nerve to close out the match.
He will now face Chinese Taipei’s eighth seed Su Li Yang in the championship match.
Meanwhile, Indian teenager Rounak Chouhan’s impressive run came to an end in the semifinals after he lost 17-21, 19-21 to Su Li Yang.
The 19-year-old qualifier had enjoyed a memorable campaign, winning both his qualifying matches before defeating Sankar Subramanian. He then produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by knocking out world No. 6 Chou Tien Chen 21-17, 26-24, followed by a straight-game victory over Misha Zilberman to reach the last four.
In the women’s singles event, Devika Sihag also bowed out in the semifinals despite winning the opening game against Denmark’s second seed Line Christophersen. Devika eventually went down 21-15, 11-21, 15-21 as Christophersen recovered strongly to book her place in her first final since the Macau Open last August.
