New Delhi: FIFA President Gianni Infantino has praised Lionel Messi after the Argentine superstar equalled German legend Miroslav Klose's all-time FIFA World Cup goalscoring record, calling the achievement a testament to Messi's "timeless brilliance."
Messi scripted another chapter in his illustrious career during Argentina's Group J opener against Algeria, becoming the first player to feature in six FIFA World Cup final tournaments. He capped the landmark appearance with his maiden World Cup hat-trick, helping the defending champions begin their campaign with a commanding victory while drawing level with Klose's tally of 16 World Cup goals.

Sharing his admiration on Instagram, Infantino wrote, "@leomessi has arrived in style, scoring his first FIFA World Cup hat-trick! An amazing, capacity crowd witnessed greatness as the defending world champions Argentina got off to a winning start against Algeria in Kansas City."
Infantino, who was present in the stands, applauded Messi's memorable performance as the 39-year-old reached the milestone within 76 minutes of the match. Messi had entered the game needing three goals to equal Klose's long-standing record.
In a separate post, the FIFA chief congratulated the Argentine icon, saying, "Congratulations to world champion Lionel Messi on scoring your 16th FIFA World Cup goal and equalling Miroslav Klose's all-time goalscoring record! This record speaks of your timeless brilliance as you continue to spread happiness to millions around the world."

Earlier in the day, France captain Kylian Mbappe scored twice to become his country's all-time leading goalscorer with 58 international goals as France defeated Senegal in their Group I opener. Norway striker Erling Haaland also enjoyed a dream FIFA World Cup debut, netting a brace to guide his side to a convincing 4-1 victory over Iraq.
Reflecting on the day's action, Infantino said, "What a fantastic day of football at the FIFA World Cup! A hat-trick from Lionel Messi following braces from Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland in front of packed stadiums and incredible atmospheres. This FIFA World Cup is setting new records and bringing immense joy to football fans across the globe."
