Russia and Belarus Swimmers Set for Full Return as World Aquatics Lifts Ban

In a significant policy shift, World Aquatics has officially lifted its sanctions on Russian and Belarusian athletes, allowing them to once again compete under their national flags and anthems.

The decision, taken by the World Aquatics Bureau in consultation with the Aquatics Integrity Unit (AQIU) and the Athletes' Committee, removes earlier restrictions that had been imposed due to ongoing political tensions. As a result, senior athletes from both countries will now be treated on par with competitors from other nations, including wearing national uniforms and participating in official ceremonies with their flags and anthems.

However, the return comes with strict conditions. Athletes must clear at least four consecutive anti-doping tests conducted in collaboration with the International Testing Agency (ITA), along with passing background checks overseen by the AQIU.

Notably, junior athletes from Russia and Belarus had already been granted permission earlier under revised guidelines, and this latest move extends similar rights to senior competitors.

World Aquatics President Husain Al Musallam emphasized the organization’s commitment to keeping sports free from political conflict. He stated that efforts over the past three years have focused on ensuring that aquatic events remain spaces for peaceful and fair competition among athletes worldwide.

The decision was welcomed by Russian Sports Minister and President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Mikhail Degtyarev, who expressed support for the move, calling it a step toward restoring equal participation in international sports.

With this development, both Russia and Belarus have also regained full membership rights under the World Aquatics Constitution, marking a complete reintegration into the global aquatic sports community.
