Mumbai — Indian players delivered a commanding performance at the Indian Open Squash Championships, with several home favourites booking their places in the semifinals after impressive quarterfinal wins.
In the men’s draw, second seed Abhay Singh and fourth seed Veer Chotrani advanced comfortably. Singh will now face Malaysia’s Ameeshenraj Chandaran, while Chotrani takes on another Malaysian, Sanjay Jeeva, in the semifinals.
Jeeva secured his spot with a convincing straight-games win over Egypt’s Ibrahim El Kabbani, while Chandaran progressed after defeating compatriot Duncan Lee.
Singh looked in control during his 3-1 win over Egypt’s Yassin Shohdy. After taking the first game, he briefly lost momentum as Shohdy levelled the match, but quickly regained dominance with aggressive play and sharp movement to close out the next two games and seal victory.
Earlier, Chotrani displayed composure in his straight-games win against Mohamed Sharaf. Despite a tight contest in the opening games, Chotrani stepped up at crucial moments and finished strongly to book his semifinal berth.
### Anahat, Tanvi shine in women’s draw
In the women’s section, top seed Anahat Singh and unseeded Tanvi Khanna ensured strong Indian representation by progressing to the semifinals. However, veteran Joshna Chinappa exited after a 1-3 loss to Egypt’s Nadien El Hammamy.
In another quarterfinal, second seed Hana Moataz edged past Malaysia’s Yasshmita Jadishkumar in a hard-fought five-game match.
The semifinals will feature an all-Indian clash between Anahat and Tanvi, while Moataz will face El Hammamy for a place in the final.
Anahat underlined her title credentials with a dominant straight-games win over Malaysia’s Sehveetrraa Kumar, controlling the match from start to finish with her powerful and precise play.
Tanvi, meanwhile, pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the day by defeating fourth seed Ainaa Amani 3-1. After a strong start and a brief setback, she held her nerve to close out the match confidently.
Chinappa began well in her match but struggled to counter El Hammamy’s sharp angles and deceptive movement as the Egyptian took control in the later stages to secure the win.
