New Delhi: India will begin their campaign to defend the Men’s T20 World Cup title on Saturday with a Group A match against the USA at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Backed by exceptional batting depth, strong all-round options, and a potent spin attack, India possess all the ingredients needed to become the first team to win back-to-back T20 World Cups and lift the trophy on home soil.
Led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian side enters the tournament after a dominant 4-1 series victory over New Zealand. Since winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados, India has maintained the best win percentage among the top ten teams. Here is a detailed SWOT analysis of India’s prospects in defending their title.
Strengths
India currently dominate global rankings, holding the top position in T20 Internationals and featuring the number one batter and bowler in Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakaravarthy respectively. Their aggressive batting style has helped them maintain an excellent run rate and consistently produce high totals.
According to Cricket-21 data, India boasts the highest run rate of 9.9 in the post-2024 World Cup phase. They also lead in balls per boundary (BPB) with an impressive figure of 4.4. Their supremacy is further evident in their record of scoring 200-plus totals, achieving 13 such scores since the 2024 T20 World Cup, with 12 of them coming while batting first.
Apart from Abhishek Sharma, India’s batting lineup features explosive players like Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Rinku Singh. The all-round trio of Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Shivam Dube adds significant balance to the squad. In bowling, Varun Chakaravarthy’s spin is complemented by the pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, forming a formidable attack.
Weaknesses
Despite several strong performances, India’s top order shows signs of vulnerability, particularly as the team is yet to finalise Abhishek Sharma’s opening partner. While Ishan Kishan has shown encouraging form, Sanju Samson has struggled recently. The lack of clarity regarding the opening combination could provide an opportunity for opponents.
India has also faced challenges in power-play bowling, occasionally conceding too many runs while failing to take early wickets. Similar concerns exist during the death overs, which could prove costly in high-pressure matches. Additionally, uncertainty remains over the number eight batting position, as team management must decide between strengthening batting or bowling depth.
Opportunities
India ended a long wait by winning the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 after their maiden triumph in 2007. As defending champions and tournament favourites, they have the opportunity to achieve three major milestones — successfully defend their title, secure a third T20 World Cup victory, and break the long-standing trend of teams failing to win the final on home ground.
Threats
All-rounder Washington Sundar remains doubtful for the tournament after missing the New Zealand series due to a side strain. His absence would reduce India’s all-round strength and limit team flexibility, especially if injuries occur within the main playing eleven.
Hardik Pandya’s fitness will also be crucial. A fully fit Pandya is considered one of India’s most valuable assets, and his absence, as seen during the latter half of the 2023 ODI World Cup, significantly affected the team’s balance. Ensuring his peak performance will be vital for India’s title defence.
