Vinesh Phogat created history on Monday by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Asian Games gold medal, defeating Japan’s Yuki Irie in the women’s freestyle 50kg final in Jakarta.

Vinesh controlled the final from the outset and quickly established a 4-0 advantage. She maintained her dominance as the bout progressed, extending the lead to 6-2 to secure the gold medal.

The historic victory marked another major milestone in Vinesh’s career and added to India’s growing success in wrestling at the Jakarta Asian Games. Her achievement also represented a breakthrough for Indian women’s wrestling on the continental stage.

The Indian wrestler had looked equally impressive in the semi-finals, where she faced Uzbekistan’s Daulatbike Yakshimuratova. Vinesh needed only 75 seconds to wrap up the bout, winning 10-0 by technical superiority.

Her emphatic semi-final victory gave her considerable momentum heading into the title clash, and she carried that confidence into the final against Irie.

Vinesh’s gold was particularly significant for Indian wrestling, which had already delivered strong performances at the Games. Her victory demonstrated the growing strength of women’s wrestling in India and established her as a trailblazer for the country’s female grapplers.

The Asian Games triumph also added another prestigious achievement to Vinesh’s international career, coming after years of success at the Commonwealth Games and other major wrestling competitions.
