Tesla CEO Elon Musk has unveiled a new version of the company's Roadster sports car, showcasing a prototype that briefly lifted off the ground during a demonstration at a SpaceX facility in Texas, drawing attention to the possibility of combining electric vehicles with airborne mobility technology.

A video shared on social media platform X showed the vehicle navigating an elevated curved track before becoming airborne for a short distance and landing safely. The demonstration fuelled speculation about the potential of flying-car technology, although Tesla has yet to announce a commercial launch timeline for any such capability.

The showcase featured a specialised propulsion system reportedly combining the electric vehicle platform with high-pressure air tanks and thruster technology. Strategically positioned thrusters are designed to generate lift and help control the vehicle's movement while airborne.

The demonstration marks another development in the long-delayed Roadster project, which Tesla first announced nearly a decade ago. The company has positioned the model as its flagship performance vehicle, intended to showcase advances in electric mobility and high-performance engineering.

However, several key details about the airborne demonstration remain unclear, including the extent to which the technology could be adapted for routine road use and whether it would meet regulatory requirements. Tesla has not provided a timeline for commercial deployment of the feature.

Musk has indicated that the vehicle would retain practical road-going capabilities, though its legality would depend on local regulations. Any vehicle capable of taking off or travelling through the air would also face additional safety, certification and operational requirements beyond those applicable to conventional cars.

The event also featured a performance demonstration in which the Roadster reportedly accelerated from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than one second. If independently verified under standard testing conditions, such acceleration would place it among the fastest vehicles in its category.

Tesla has also cited an expected driving range of around 300 miles and a top speed exceeding 230 miles per hour for the vehicle.

While the demonstration has renewed interest in the Roadster's capabilities, questions remain over its final specifications, production schedule and pricing. The key challenge will be translating the prototype's demonstrated performance into a commercially viable vehicle that meets road-safety standards and regulatory requirements.
