New Delhi: OpenAI is reportedly preparing the most significant upgrade to ChatGPT since its launch, with plans to transform the AI platform into a comprehensive “superapp” by integrating advanced coding tools, AI agents and third-party services.
According to a report by the Financial Times, the move is part of a wider restructuring effort within OpenAI as the company sharpens its focus on high-value enterprise customers while facing growing competition from rival AI startup Anthropic.
The report, citing several current and former OpenAI employees, said the upcoming overhaul will place greater emphasis on Codex, the company’s AI-powered coding product. The redesigned experience is expected to be introduced in the coming weeks across ChatGPT’s web and mobile platforms.
As part of the update, OpenAI is revamping ChatGPT’s interface to more actively guide users toward specialised features such as coding assistance, image generation and integrated services offered through external partners. Platforms including Canva and Booking.com are expected to be featured within the ecosystem, making ChatGPT a broader productivity hub rather than just a conversational AI tool.
The report noted that a large portion of Codex users are paid subscribers. OpenAI currently has around 2 million business customers, who account for nearly 40 per cent of the company’s revenue. That figure is projected to increase to roughly 50 per cent by the end of the year, highlighting the growing importance of enterprise clients to the company’s business model.
OpenAI has previously disclosed that ChatGPT serves more than 900 million weekly active users worldwide, while its paid consumer subscriber base has surpassed 50 million users.
The reported overhaul comes amid continued expansion of OpenAI’s commercial ambitions. Earlier reports suggested the company was preparing a confidential filing for a future U.S. initial public offering (IPO), although Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has indicated that any listing would depend on broader strategic priorities rather than a fixed timeline.
If implemented as reported, the changes would mark a major shift in ChatGPT’s evolution, positioning it as a unified platform that combines AI-powered conversation, coding, productivity tools and third-party services within a single digital ecosystem.
