New Delhi — In a significant push to strengthen India's water research and innovation ecosystem, the government will launch several key initiatives on Monday aimed at promoting advanced research, technology adoption and community participation in water conservation.
A major highlight will be the launch of ‘MAHA on Water’ (Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas for Water), a joint initiative of the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation. The mission will support cutting-edge research in critical areas such as water resource management, drinking water, climate resilience and efficient water use.
An open call for research proposals under the programme will also be announced during the ‘National Workshop on R&D in Water’, which will be held in New Delhi.
The workshop is expected to bring together representatives from government departments, industry, academia, scientific institutions, startups and technical organisations to foster collaboration and accelerate innovation-driven solutions for sustainable water management.
The event will be inaugurated by C. R. Patil, Jitendra Singh, Raj Bhushan Choudhary and V. Narayanan.
Another key announcement will be an open call for startups and MSMEs through the BHARAT-WIN Portal, aimed at supporting the development of innovative products and prototypes for the water sector.
The workshop will also witness the launch of Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: Catch the Rain (JSJB:CTR), a digital platform designed to encourage community-led water conservation. The platform will allow citizens, institutions and local bodies to document and showcase initiatives related to water conservation, rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge.
In a further boost to technology-driven water management, the Ministry of Jal Shakti and Indian Space Research Organisation are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance the use of satellite-based applications and advanced technologies for water resource assessment, monitoring and management. The collaboration has already identified 24 priority studies and areas of cooperation.
The workshop's technical sessions will focus on a wide range of topics, including groundwater management, irrigation practices, river morphology, floodplain mapping, climate resilience, ecological assessments, and the safety of dams and hydraulic structures.
The initiatives underscore the government's growing emphasis on research, innovation and public participation to address India's long-term water security challenges.
