India Emerges as Major Growth Hub for OpenAI’s Codex, Weekly Users Jump 27-Fold in 2026

New Delhi: India has become one of the fastest-growing markets for OpenAI’s artificial intelligence-powered coding assistant Codex, with the platform’s weekly active user base surging 27 times since the start of 2026.

The US-based AI company shared the latest figures during Mumbai Tech Week, highlighting the rapid adoption of Codex among developers, entrepreneurs, researchers, students and business professionals across the country.

According to OpenAI, India currently ranks among the top five countries globally for Codex adoption and is also among the top 10 markets worldwide in terms of overall engagement on the platform.

The company revealed that daily interactions with Codex in India had increased more than 20-fold by late April compared to the beginning of the year, reflecting the growing popularity of AI-powered productivity tools.

While Codex was initially designed to assist software developers with coding tasks, its use cases have expanded significantly. OpenAI said more than a quarter of all requests from Indian users now involve non-coding activities such as information synthesis, document drafting, research automation, workflow management and communication support.

The latest trends reinforce earlier findings that coding-related usage of Codex in India is nearly three times higher than the global average. Similarly, coding-focused queries from Indian users are reported to be almost three times the global median.

Thomas Jeng, Head of Startups for the Asia-Pacific region at OpenAI, said the most notable aspect of Codex’s growth in India is the diversity of users adopting the platform.

“What’s exciting about India is that adoption is not just happening among software engineers. We are seeing founders, operators, researchers, students and business teams increasingly use Codex to turn ideas into working outcomes faster,” he said.

Jeng noted that although Codex started as a coding-centric product, users are increasingly leveraging it to transform ideas into execution across a wide range of professional activities.

OpenAI attributed the strong momentum to India’s rapidly expanding startup and developer ecosystem, along with growing demand from enterprises seeking to integrate AI tools into their workflows.

The figures further underline India’s rising importance in the global AI landscape, as businesses and professionals increasingly embrace artificial intelligence to enhance productivity and innovation.
