ICU Fire at SCB Medical College in Odisha Claims 10 Lives, Several Injured

Bhubaneswar: A devastating fire at the trauma care centre of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, claimed the lives of at least 10 patients and left several others with serious burn injuries in the early hours of Monday.

According to initial reports, the blaze broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) between 2:30 AM and 3:00 AM, reportedly triggered by a suspected electrical short circuit.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited the hospital, met with injured patients, and reviewed the situation. Following the visit, he announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the families of each deceased patient.

Speaking to the media, Majhi said the fire affected patients admitted in the Trauma Care ICU as well as nearby wards. A total of 23 patients who were receiving treatment on the first floor of the trauma care unit were quickly shifted to safer areas after the fire broke out.

“Seven critically ill patients died during the process of being moved, while three others passed away later after being shifted to other ICUs. It is a very unfortunate incident,” he said.

The Chief Minister expressed condolences to the families of the victims and prayed to Lord Jagannath for the speedy recovery of the injured. He also directed the Health Department to ensure the best possible treatment for those who sustained severe injuries and are currently being treated in other wards and ICUs.

Majhi further highlighted the bravery of hospital staff during the emergency. At least 11 staff members, including security personnel, risked their lives to rescue patients from the burning unit. Several of them suffered injuries due to smoke inhalation and flames but are now reported to be stable and receiving treatment.

The Chief Minister also announced a judicial inquiry into the incident and assured strict action if negligence is found to be responsible for the fire.

He noted that the state government has already taken steps to strengthen fire safety in hospitals. According to him, Rs 320 crore was allocated in the 2025–26 state budget to improve fire safety infrastructure in healthcare facilities, with work currently underway. An additional Rs 400 crore has been earmarked for the 2026–27 financial year.

Majhi has also instructed officials to ensure the installation of advanced fire-extinguishing systems in hospitals across Odisha. Additionally, he directed the Director General of the Odisha Fire and Emergency Services, Sudhanshu Sarangi, to personally inspect fire safety arrangements at SCB Medical College and ensure compliance with safety norms.

The government said strict action will be taken if the judicial inquiry finds that negligence played a role in the tragedy.
