Tejas Crashes at Dubai Air Show: IAF Mourns Pilot’s Death

In a tragic incident on Friday, an Indian Air Force (IAF) Tejas fighter jet crashed during an aerial demonstration at the Dubai Air Show, leading to the death of the pilot.

The IAF announced the accident on X, stating: “An IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show today. The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief.”

The Air Force added that a court of inquiry has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.

The accident took place during the biennial Dubai Air Show, one of the world’s largest aviation exhibitions, which has been hosting major defence and aerospace announcements throughout the week.

This marks the second crash involving a Tejas aircraft—the first occurred in 2024 near Jaisalmer, where the pilot ejected safely. That incident was also the first crash in the Tejas’ 23-year history since its maiden flight in 2001.

The LCA Tejas is a 4.5-generation, multi-role, all-weather fighter aircraft capable of offensive air support, close combat, ground attack and maritime operations.

The Dubai Air Show also saw India and Germany revive high-technology defence cooperation after nearly three decades. On November 19, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a landmark contract with German defence electronics major HENSOLDT to jointly develop a LiDAR-based Obstacle Avoidance System (OAS) for Indian military helicopters—a breakthrough that has drawn global attention.
