Two terrorists arrested in J&K’s Poonch, arms cache recovered

Jammu- Two terrorists were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district during an intelligence-led operation, police said on Sunday. Arms and ammunition were later recovered based on their disclosures.

The arrested men have been identified as Tariq Sheikh of Azamabad and Riyaz Ahmad, both residents of Chamber village in Poonch. They were detained during a raid, following which police searched Sheikh’s rented accommodation in Jallian village. The raid led to the recovery of two assault rifles along with ammunition. Interrogation of the duo is ongoing, police added.

Security agencies have intensified counter-terror operations across the Union Territory, targeting not just armed militants but also their overground workers (OGWs) and sympathisers. Alongside infiltration attempts across the 740-km Line of Control (LoC), the focus has also turned to dismantling the wider terror support network, including hawala funding, drug smuggling, and peddling.

Investigations have shown that many of these rackets are linked to handlers based across the border, who also use drones to drop arms, ammunition, cash, and drugs into J&K. To counter this, the Border Security Force (BSF) has deployed specialised anti-drone systems along the international border in Jammu, Samba, and Kathua districts.
