11 Years of Modi Government: ‘Garib Kalyan’ Transformed from Slogan to Reality with Inclusive Growth

New Delhi – Over the past eleven years, the Narendra Modi-led government has implemented transformative reforms focused on the welfare of the poor, turning the vision of Garib Kalyan (welfare of the poor) into a reality. With a long-term developmental strategy, the government reports that over 25 crore people have moved out of multidimensional poverty, thanks to inclusive policies and bold governance.

After coming to power in 2014, the Modi government prioritized the upliftment of the underprivileged through pioneering initiatives such as Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Jan Dhan Yojana, Ujjwala Yojana, Swachh Bharat, and Ayushman Bharat, revolutionizing basic access to banking, sanitation, health, housing, and energy.

On World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared on social media platform X:

“Over the past decade, the NDA Government has taken pathbreaking steps to uplift several people from the clutches of poverty, focusing on empowerment, infrastructure, and inclusion.”

Key Achievements Under Modi Government:

1. Open Defecation Free (ODF) India
Over 4,576 cities have achieved 100% ODF status, ensuring sanitation and dignity for all citizens, particularly the rural poor.

2. Rural Sanitation
The Swachh Bharat Mission led to the construction of nearly 12 crore toilets, providing sanitation coverage in rural areas and improved waste management in over 5 lakh villages.

3. Empowering Women through Housing
Under PM Awas Yojana, over 4 crore homes have been built, with 73% owned or co-owned by women, giving them both security and dignity.

4. Free Solar Power – PM Surya Ghar Yojana
The scheme now provides up to 300 units of free electricity to more than 10 lakh homes, bringing clean energy to millions.

5. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
DBT has become a cornerstone of transparent governance, eliminating middlemen and ensuring benefits directly reach the beneficiaries. Over 1,200 schemes use DBT, impacting 44 crore citizens and saving the government over ?3.48 lakh crore.

6. Ayushman Bharat: Healthcare for All
More than 9.3 crore treatments have been provided under Ayushman Bharat, the world’s largest health insurance scheme, offering coverage of ?5 lakh per family per year. All senior citizens above 70 are now included.

7. Ujala Yojana: LED Revolution
Over 36 crore LED bulbs distributed under UJALA are helping households save around ?19,153 crore annually, reducing CO? emissions by 3.87 crore tonnes.

8. Jal Jeevan Mission
This mission has brought tap water to the doorsteps of millions who previously had to walk long distances for drinking water.

9. Ujjwala Yojana
More than 10 crore LPG connections have been given under the scheme, ensuring clean cooking fuel access for women, especially in rural India.

10. Jan Dhan Yojana: Financial Inclusion
With over 55.44 crore bank accounts, Jan Dhan Yojana is the world’s largest financial inclusion programme. Women own 55.7% of these accounts.

11. Village Electrification
Under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, over 19,000 remote villages have been electrified, achieving 100% village electrification.

Summing up these achievements, PM Modi wrote:

“All our key schemes have transformed the lives of the poor. Initiatives like PM Awas Yojana, PM Ujjwala Yojana, Jan Dhan Yojana, and Ayushman Bharat have enhanced access to housing, clean cooking fuel, banking, and healthcare. The push for DBT, digital inclusion, and rural infrastructure has ensured transparency and faster delivery of benefits to the last mile.”

He concluded:

“It is due to this that over 25 crore people have defeated poverty.”
