Ranchi: The Kurmi community brought its rich folk traditions to the streets of Ranchi on Wednesday as members celebrated Dahre Sohrai with a colourful procession from Morabadi Ground to Albert Ekka Chowk. Participants dressed in traditional attire and showcased customs reflecting their cultural heritage and rural way of life.

Organised under the banner of Vrihad Jharkhand Kala Sanskriti, the event saw participation from members of the Kurmi community representing all 14 blocks of Ranchi district.

Preparations for the celebration had been underway for nearly a month. The organisers said the objective was to familiarise city residents with the community's folk traditions and its close connection with village life.

Dahre Sohrai is an important agricultural festival during which people express gratitude and respect towards the animals that assist in farming, nature and their ancestors.

This year's celebration also provided a platform for raising demands related to the community's language and cultural identity. Participants called for Kurmali to receive recognition and respect similar to that accorded to the Santhali language. The organisers said they intended to raise the issue with Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

They are also preparing to demand government holidays for traditional festivals such as Tusu, Karam and Sohrai.

According to the organisers, recognising the community's language and festivals is essential to preserving and passing on the cultural heritage inherited from previous generations.

The Dahre Sohrai celebration thus went beyond a display of folk customs, emerging as a platform for the Kurmi community to seek greater recognition for its language, traditions and festivals.
