October 21 is not just a date on the police calendar — it is a day set aside to remember the brave officers who gave their lives while performing their duty. On the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, tributes were paid to martyred police personnel from the Jharkhand Police headquarters down to police lines across every district.
In keeping with the occasion, a commemorative programme was held at the Shaheed Smarak complex of JAP-2. Commandant Sarojini Lakra, along with several senior police officers and personnel, laid floral wreaths at the martyrs' memorial and paid homage to the fallen.
The story behind Police Commemoration Day goes back to 1959, when police personnel were killed in an attack by Chinese soldiers at Hot Springs in Ladakh. Every year since, October 21 has been observed across the country in their memory. The day honours all police personnel who have laid down their lives for law and order, for the country and for the safety of ordinary citizens.
At the ceremony, tributes were paid to 154 officers and personnel of paramilitary forces who were martyred in the line of duty across the country during 2025-26. Three police personnel from Jharkhand were remembered with particular reverence — Sub-Inspector Hemant Bhagat, Constable Sunil Ram and Constable Santan Kumar Mehta. Officers and personnel honoured their sacrifice and recalled their courage and dedication to duty.
The gathering also served as a pledge to carry forward the spirit of courage and service that the martyrs embodied. Police Commemoration Day is more than a formal ceremony — it is a way of keeping alive a tradition in which police personnel put duty above everything else, and sometimes stake everything for it.
