Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is performing the traditional tenth-day death rituals for his mother, Rupi Soren, at his ancestral village of Nemra on Saturday. The rituals, conducted in accordance with tribal traditions and local customs, will mark the end of the family's period of mourning-related restrictions. A traditional ceremonial feast will be organised in the village on Sunday, October 18.
People from across Jharkhand and other parts of the country are expected to attend the feast and pay their respects to the Soren family. According to administrative estimates, more than one lakh people could gather for the event. Preparations have been stepped up in Nemra and surrounding areas to manage the anticipated turnout.
The responsibilities for conducting the traditional rituals have been assigned to Kudum Hadam Chhotu Besra, Nayke Hadam Chetan Tudu, Pranik Hadam Biju Soren and Kashinath Besra. The ceremonial feast will follow the completion of Saturday's rituals.
### Elaborate Security Arrangements from Nemra to Ramgarh
In view of the expected crowd and the presence of prominent guests, the administration has put extensive security arrangements in place. Officials held a meeting on Friday to allocate responsibilities for security and the maintenance of law and order.
According to available information, 14 IPS officers and 42 officers of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) rank have been deployed for the event. A large number of additional police personnel will also assist in managing security.
Special attention is being given to the stretch between Nemra and Ramgarh to ensure smooth movement of visitors and prevent congestion. Three helipads have also been prepared to facilitate the arrival and departure of VIPs and other distinguished guests from different parts of the country.
The administration's priorities include crowd management, traffic regulation and security at the venue.
### Hemant Soren Loses Both Parents Within a Year
The occasion comes at a particularly difficult time for the Chief Minister and his family. Rupi Soren died at a private hospital in Ranchi on October 7. Her last rites were performed in Nemra on October 8, with Hemant Soren lighting his mother's funeral pyre.
Rupi Soren was the wife of late Shibu Soren, founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and former Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Shibu Soren died at a hospital in Delhi in 2025.
Hemant Soren has thus lost both his parents within a period of roughly one year.
The family is now completing Rupi Soren's final rites in accordance with traditional customs. Following Saturday's tenth-day rituals, Sunday's ceremonial feast is expected to bring together a large gathering of relatives, well-wishers, political figures and members of the public to offer condolences and pay their respects to the family.
