In a crackdown on cybercrime, Jamtara Police have arrested three alleged cyber fraudsters and seized five mobile phones, 11 SIM cards and a motorcycle during a raid. The arrests were made following a tip-off received by Jamtara Superintendent of Police Shambhu Kumar Singh.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Bhim Mandal and Kurban Ansari, residents of the Narayanpur police station area, and Md Mojahid Ansari of Karmatanr.
According to police, a team formed under the leadership of Cyber Deputy Superintendent of Police Amit Ravidas conducted the raid and apprehended the three suspects. Investigators suspect that the accused were involved in a cyber fraud operation targeting people through deceptive mobile applications and credit card-related scams.
Fake APK Files Used to Target Victims
During the investigation, police found that the accused allegedly tricked people into downloading APK files on their mobile phones under the pretext of updating bills.
They also reportedly posed as representatives offering to deactivate existing credit cards or issue new ones, using these claims to gain the trust of unsuspecting victims.
According to police, once victims installed the APK files, the accused allegedly obtained confidential credit card information and used it to withdraw money from victims' accounts.
The police are investigating how the applications were circulated, how the stolen information was used and whether other individuals were involved in the alleged fraud network.
Arrested Suspects Have Previous Cases, Say Police
Police said the arrested suspects have previous criminal cases registered against them.
According to the police records cited in the case, Bhim Mandal has cases registered under Jamtara Cyber Police Station Case No. 49/24 and Narayanpur Police Station Case No. 62/15.
Kurban Ansari has a case registered under Cyber Police Station Case No. 28/23, while a case under Cyber Police Station Case No. 58/19 has been registered against Md Javed Ansari, according to the information provided by police.
The name of the third accused appears as Md Mojahid Ansari in the initial identification, while the criminal-history details mention Md Javed Ansari. This discrepancy should be verified with the police before publication.
The raid was conducted with the participation of Cyber Police Station in-charge Rajesh Mandal, police officer Amit Khivary and armed police personnel.
Jamtara Police are continuing their investigation to identify other suspected members of the network and determine the full extent of the alleged cyber fraud operation.
How to Protect Yourself from APK-Based Cyber Fraud
Police investigations into such cases highlight the risks associated with installing applications received through unknown links. Mobile users should avoid downloading APK files from unverified sources, never share credit card details or OTPs with unknown callers, and contact their bank directly to verify suspicious requests concerning card updates or replacements.
