Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc in Gumla’s Ghaghra, Families Seek Compensation and Housing

Torrential rain in Ghaghra block of Gumla district has caused widespread damage, with several kutcha and asbestos-roofed houses collapsing in different villages and leaving families struggling for shelter.

Several houses have been damaged in Goya, Sarango Nawatoli, Malgo, Chhath Mohalla and Salgi. Household belongings and stored food grains were also buried under the debris, adding to the difficulties faced by affected families.

In Goya village, a wall belonging to resident Rafiq Khan suddenly collapsed, damaging the adjoining wall and asbestos roofing of Jiaul Khan's house. Jiaul Khan's family was trapped under the debris following the collapse.

Local residents immediately launched a rescue effort and managed to pull the family members out from under the rubble. One member of the family sustained serious injuries and was referred to Gumla Sadar Hospital for further treatment.

Houses damaged, food grains buried under debris

In Sarango Nawa Toli, a wall of Shankar Oraon's house collapsed due to the heavy rain. The falling wall damaged the asbestos roofing and household belongings.

In Malgo village, the wall of Laxman Ram's house also collapsed, bringing down part of the roof structure and asbestos sheets. Around 10 sacks of rice and wheat, along with garlic, onions and two bicycles, were reportedly buried and damaged in the debris.

Meanwhile, the house of Lalita Devi in Ghaghra's Chhath Mohalla was also severely damaged. With the roof and asbestos sheets broken, the family is now facing difficulties in finding a safe place to stay.

Waterlogging destroys house in Salgi

In Salgi village, the house of Jagmohan Lohra collapsed after prolonged waterlogging. According to the family, water began flowing over a newly constructed small bridge along the roadside and entered the house. Continued waterlogging weakened the structure, eventually causing it to collapse.

With heavy rain continuing and houses collapsing one after another, affected families are facing an urgent shortage of safe shelter and food.

The victims have urged the administration to conduct an immediate assessment of the damage, provide appropriate compensation and relief materials, and arrange housing for families whose homes have been destroyed.
