New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of seven people in a road accident in Jharkhand’s Khunti district and extended her condolences to the bereaved families. She also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

In a post on X, the President described the incident as extremely heartbreaking and conveyed her sympathies to the families who lost their loved ones.

The accident took place around 10 p.m. on Thursday near the Jone-Ludru turn on the Karra-Torpa main road in Karra village. According to the available information, a scooter first met with an accident, prompting local residents to gather at the roadside to assist the rider.

At that moment, an 18-wheeler trailer truck allegedly approached from the Torpa side at high speed and ran over the people gathered at the spot.

Six people died on the scene, while a 12-year-old boy later succumbed to his injuries during treatment at Khunti Sadar Hospital. A young girl was also injured.

Villagers Block Road, Demand Action and Compensation

The tragedy triggered anger among local residents on Friday morning. Villagers blocked the main road near the Karra railway crossing by burning tyres, bringing traffic in the area to a standstill.

The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of the trailer truck driver allegedly involved in the accident, government jobs for the families of the deceased and adequate compensation for the victims’ relatives.

They also raised concerns about road safety near the Jone-Ludru turn, alleging that poor visibility and the condition of the road make the stretch particularly dangerous. Despite its accident-prone nature, heavy vehicles frequently pass through the area at high speeds, they claimed.

The villagers called for stronger safety measures at the spot to prevent similar accidents.

Police and administrative officials reached the site after receiving information about the blockade and held discussions with the protesters to restore normal traffic movement. Officials assured them that the affected families would receive all possible assistance and compensation in accordance with government provisions.

Additional police personnel were deployed in the area as a precautionary measure amid tensions.
