Tribal Leaders Rally Around August 30 Gathering Over Delimitation Issue in Jharkhand

Tribal organisations and leaders in Jharkhand are preparing to come together on August 30 for an "Adivasi Ekta Mahajutan" to raise concerns over the issue of delimitation and its possible impact on the political representation and rights of tribal communities in the state.

The proposed gathering has received support from several young tribal voices, including Shashi Panna, Jyotsna Kerketta, Priyanka Kachhap, Chandni Baraik and Anju Tirkey. Central Sarna Committee president Ajay Tirkey and tribal leader Laxminarayan Munda have also extended their support to the programme.

During an interaction held ahead of the gathering, speakers levelled serious allegations against the BJP over the delimitation issue. Jyotsna Kerketta alleged that a particular narrative was being created in the name of delimitation with the objective of weakening the tribal community and serving political interests. She said the community would not compromise on issues concerning its rights, identity and existence.

The speakers also invited tribal leaders and representatives of political parties across the political spectrum to participate in the August 30 gathering. They argued that the protection of tribal interests, land and identity should take precedence over political affiliations. The message repeated during the interaction was, "First the land must survive, then the party will survive."

Shashi Panna said the tribal community needs to remain united and put forward its concerns on delimitation. Priyanka Kachhap described the issue as one concerning the future of the tribal community rather than the interest of any particular organisation or political party.

Jyotsna Kerketta and Chandni Baraik appealed to people from the tribal community to participate in large numbers. Ajay Tirkey said unity remains the community's biggest strength, while Laxminarayan Munda stressed the need for greater awareness about issues related to tribal rights and identity.

The speakers alleged that delimitation could be used to weaken the political influence of tribal communities in Jharkhand and potentially affect tribal leadership in the future.
