Man Arrested in Ranchi for Allegedly Demanding Rs.5 Crore Extortion, Issuing Death Threats

Argora police have arrested a man for allegedly demanding ?5 crore in extortion and threatening to kill a 68-year-old doctor in Ranchi.

According to police, Dr Durga Charan Sinha, a resident of Ashok Nagar Road No. 4, approached the police after allegedly receiving repeated extortion demands and death threats from the user of mobile number 9199404559 since July 29.

Based on his complaint, Argora police registered a case, numbered 224/2026, on August 23 under relevant sections of the law and began an investigation.

Acting on directions from the Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police and the Superintendent of Police (City), investigators traced the mobile number and arrested its alleged user, identified as 46-year-old Deepak Kumar Das, from the Sukhdeonagar police station area.

Police said Das is originally from Lohardaga and had been living as a tenant near Pani Tanki in Ranchi. He is being forwarded to the court following his arrest.

The police also recovered the SIM card allegedly used to make the extortion demands. Investigators are examining the circumstances behind the threats and the alleged motive for demanding such a large amount.

The arrest was carried out by a team comprising the Hatia Deputy Superintendent of Police, Argora police station in-charge Satish Kumar Gorai, Sub-Inspector Satyam Kumar and armed police personnel.

The case highlights the role of mobile and SIM tracking in investigating extortion complaints, with police using the number mentioned in the complaint to identify and locate the alleged suspect.
