Ranchi Police have busted an alleged illegal trade in restricted cough syrup in the Ratu police station area and arrested three persons in connection with the case. Police recovered 570 bottles of restricted cough syrup and three mobile phones from their possession.
According to police, Senior Superintendent of Police received confidential information on August 20 that restricted cough syrup was being illegally bought and sold around Haji Chowk on Ring Road under Ratu police station.
Acting on the information, a raid team was formed under the direction of the Superintendent of Police (Rural) and led by DSP Headquarters-II Ajay Aryan. The team conducted a raid at an isolated location near Caring Hands Hospital in Futkal Toli, Bose Nagar.
Police said three suspects were found at the spot with five cartons containing 570 bottles of 100-ml Wings Onerex Codine Cough Syrup. The suspects were allegedly waiting there to deliver the consignment.
The arrested persons have been identified as Wahajul Ansari, 32, Shahnawaz Ansari, 29, and Naeem Ansari, 29.
During questioning, the accused allegedly told investigators that the restricted cough syrup was being supplied in different parts of Ranchi and sold at inflated prices. Police are now investigating the source of the consignment and whether other people are involved in the alleged supply chain.
The seized cough syrup and mobile phones have been taken into police custody. A case has been registered at Ratu police station as Case No. 279/26, dated August 20, 2026, under Section 317(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 21(C) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The arrested accused are being sent to judicial custody.
The raid team included DSP Ajay Aryan, police sub-inspectors Satya Prakash Upadhyay and Shubham Kumar, along with Sanjeev Kumar, Sandeep Raj, Chhotu Kumar, Vinit Kumar, Mahesh Prasad Kushwaha and armed personnel from Ratu police station.
The seizure is significant because the police are treating the cough syrup as part of an alleged illegal distribution network rather than an isolated possession case. Further investigation is expected to focus on the source of the medicines, their intended recipients and the wider network involved in their distribution.
