Jharkhand High Court sets two-month deadline to fill vacant JPSC posts

The Jharkhand High Court has given the state government a two-month deadline to complete the appointment process for vacant posts at the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), including those of its chairperson and members.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice M.S. Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar heard the matter on Thursday. During the hearing, the Advocate General informed the court that the government was taking the issue of vacancies in the commission seriously and expected the appointment process to be completed within the next two months.

Taking note of the government's assurance, the High Court directed the state to complete the appointments within the stipulated period. It also ordered the government to submit a status report on the steps taken in the matter before November 19, when the case will come up for further hearing.

The issue came to the court's attention during the hearing of a suo motu public interest litigation concerning staff shortages in the Forest Department. During the proceedings, it emerged that several departments in the state are also facing significant vacancies, with recruitment for many of these posts dependent on the JPSC.

The vacancies in the commission itself have therefore become a matter of concern, as the absence of key office-bearers can affect the recruitment and selection process for government posts.

The court's intervention effectively puts the government on a deadline: vacancies in departments need to be addressed, but that requires a functioning commission capable of conducting the necessary recruitment processes.

The focus will now shift to the government's implementation of the court's direction and the progress it reports on November 19. The status report is likely to indicate how far the appointment process for the vacant JPSC posts has advanced.
