A 52-year-old man was killed after being hit by a coal-transporting Hyva truck near the building of Triveni Sainik Limited, an NTPC-linked mining operation, at Chepakalan under Dadikalan OP of Barkagaon police station area in Hazaribagh district on Friday morning.
The accident occurred at around 5 a.m. According to local residents, Jaypali Mahto had left his new residence carrying an axe and was heading towards the forest to collect fodder for his goats.
When he reached near Chepakalan, a Hyva truck reportedly travelling at high speed struck him. The impact was severe and Mahto died at the spot.
Following the accident, the truck driver allegedly fled the scene with the vehicle. The incident triggered anger among local residents, who blocked the road and brought coal transportation to a halt.
Villagers staged a protest against NTPC, Triveni Sainik and the transport company associated with coal movement in the area. They alleged that heavy vehicles engaged in coal transportation frequently travel at high speed, creating a serious risk to people living and travelling along the road.
Residents demanded immediate measures to control the speed of coal-carrying vehicles and improve road safety in the area. They also sought accountability in the latest accident and action against the driver responsible.
The incident has once again raised concerns among villagers over road safety and the movement of heavy coal-transport vehicles through populated areas. Local residents said stricter monitoring and enforcement were needed to prevent further loss of life.
