Jamshedpur: The murder of Karni Sena's East Singhbhum district president, Himanshu Singh, has triggered a political flashpoint in Jharkhand, with former Chief Minister Raghubar Das announcing a Jamshedpur bandh on July 3 and accusing the state government of failing to contain rising crime.
Das visited the slain leader's residence in Adityapur today to meet the grieving family and offer his condolences. During his visit, he also interacted with senior district officials and sought a detailed briefing on the progress of the investigation.
Addressing mediamen later, the BJP leader alleged that the state's law and order machinery had "collapsed," claiming that incidents of murder, extortion and violent crime had become alarmingly frequent across Jharkhand. He said the killing of Himanshu Singh had intensified public concerns over safety and reflected the administration's inability to curb organised crime.
Calling for a peaceful bandh on July 3, Das urged traders, transport operators, social organisations and citizens to participate in what he described as a public movement seeking justice for the slain Karni Sena leader and demanding stronger policing.
He maintained that the shutdown was intended to highlight public anger over deteriorating security rather than serve as a political programme.
The former Chief Minister also raised questions over the conduct of police personnel reportedly present near the crime scene at the time of the incident.
He said any officer found guilty of negligence or complicity should face criminal proceedings in addition to departmental action.
Launching a scathing attack on the Hemant Soren government, Das alleged that the administration had failed in its primary responsibility of protecting citizens. He further claimed that governance had taken a back seat while criminal activities continued unchecked.
Demanding immediate relief for the victim's family, Das urged the state government to provide a government job to one of the deceased's dependents, extend adequate financial compensation, and ensure the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of all those involved in the murder.
The killing has drawn widespread attention in the Kolhan region and intensified political debate over the state's law-and-order situation, with opposition parties seeking stronger action against those responsible.
