Humidity Pushes Discomfort Index Higher Across Jharkhand

Jamshedpur: Jharkhand is reeling under intense discomfort as soaring humidity and unusually high night temperatures have significantly pushed up the discomfort index across the state, making conditions feel far hotter than the actual recorded temperatures.

Jamshedpur continues to bear the brunt of the oppressive weather, recording a maximum temperature of 39.6°C, while the minimum settled at a sweltering 29.6°C, a sharp 4.2 degrees above normal.

The combination of elevated humidity and lack of nighttime cooling has made conditions particularly unbearable, with residents experiencing sticky, exhausting weather round the clock.

In Ranchi, though the maximum temperature remained relatively comfortable at 35°C, the minimum temperature of 25.2°C, nearly 1.8 degrees above normal, has led to increased humidity and warmer nights, reducing relief even after sunset.

Across the state, the discomfort level remains high. Daltonganj recorded the highest maximum temperature at 41°C, followed by Bokaro Thermal at 40.1°C, while Chaibasa touched 38°C. Weather experts note that rising minimum temperatures are a key indicator of increasing atmospheric moisture, which directly elevates the discomfort index and intensifies heat stress.

“The humidity is making the air feel heavier and the heat more oppressive, particularly during the evening and early morning hours when temperatures usually dip,” officials observed.

Amid the uncomfortable weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast relief in the form of thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next three days.

On May 18, isolated places across Jharkhand—excluding the north-western region—are likely to witness thunderstorm, lightning and winds of 40-50 Kmph.

The weather activity is expected to intensify on May 19, with stronger gusts of 50-60 Kmph likely over Dhanbad and Giridih, while central and southern districts, including East Singhbhum, may experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate winds.

The alert continues on May 20, when East Singhbhum, Hazaribagh, Koderma and Ramgarh are likely to witness stronger thunderstorm activity and gusty winds reaching up to 60 Kmph.

As Jharkhand endures a spell of humid discomfort, residents are hoping the approaching thunderstorms will bring much-needed respite from the sultry conditions, even as authorities urge caution against lightning and sudden wind-related hazards.
