Patna: A major fire broke out in one of the coaches of the Sasaram-Patna fast passenger train in Bihar on Monday morning, triggering panic among passengers and railway staff. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
According to railway officials, the incident occurred around 6 a.m. near the Sasaram Railway Station shortly before the train was scheduled to depart for Patna.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit inside the coach.
Eyewitness visuals showed thick black smoke billowing from the affected compartment as panic spread across the railway platform.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, Railway Police personnel and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and launched firefighting operations. After considerable effort, the blaze was brought under control.
However, one coach of the train was completely damaged in the fire.
Railway authorities said work is underway to separate the burnt coach from the train, conduct safety inspections, and restore normal operations before the train resumes its journey.
The incident comes just a day after another fire accident involving the Rajdhani Express near Kota in Rajasthan, where two rear coaches of the Delhi-bound train caught fire. No injuries were reported in that case either.
Railway officials said the train’s safety mechanisms worked effectively, automatically stopping the train after the fire was detected. The Overhead Equipment (OHE) power supply was also immediately disconnected to avoid further risk.
Following the recent incidents, Indian Railways has initiated a nationwide audit of fire safety systems installed in coaches and railway infrastructure to strengthen preparedness and prevent similar accidents in the future.
