Jamshedpur: Jharkhand is likely to witness an active spell of pre-monsoon weather over the next five days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across several parts of the state from May 12 to May 16.
According to the latest weather bulletin, southern and central districts—including Ranchi, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Ramgarh, Gumla, and Khunti—are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph. Similar weather conditions are also likely in adjoining north-eastern districts such as Dumka, Deoghar, and Jamtara. The remaining parts of the state may witness moderate thunder activity with wind speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph.
The changing weather pattern has already brought intermittent rainfall across Jharkhand, offering temporary respite from the recent heatwave. Several areas have recorded light to moderate showers over the past few days, with temperatures dropping noticeably in many districts.
“After days of unbearable heat, the sudden rain and cool breeze have brought much-needed relief. But the frequent lightning and strong winds are making people anxious, especially during evening hours,” said Sanjay Mukherjee, a resident of Kadma in Jamshedpur.
Meteorologists have attributed the unstable conditions to a persistent upper air cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and nearby regions, along with multiple atmospheric troughs passing through Jharkhand. These systems are creating favourable conditions for moisture build-up, resulting in thunderstorms and gusty winds across eastern India.
The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious, avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, and stay away from trees, electric poles, and water bodies during lightning activity. With the weather expected to remain volatile through the week, authorities have urged people to keep track of official advisories and take necessary precautions.
